Global Strike for Gaza

Boycott the Economy. Every Thursday

People in Gaza have now been killed by bullets, bombs and starvation for over 22 months, and our ELECTED politicians are still not doing their job!

It is time to hit them where it hurts.

Boycott the economy. Every Thursday.

Everyone can participate
  1. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING
    • Make no purchases of any kind on Thursdays. Check to ensure that no subscriptions or automatic payments are scheduled to leave your account on Thursday.
    • This boycott covers all businesses including gas stations (fuel), pharmacies etc. For this strike to have an impact we must spend NOTHING.
  2. LIMIT OR AVOID PUBLIC TRANSPORT
    • If you must travel for work or for other essential reasons, try to carpool, cycle or walk instead.
      • If public transport is unavoidable, see if you can buy tickets in advance so no transactions is registered on Thursday itself.
    • Do not buy fuel/charge electric cars on Thursdays.
    • Every penny not spent adds to the collective effect.
  3. THIS STRIKE DOES NOT INCLUDE WORK
    • Many of us live paycheque to paycheque, and not everyone can risk refusing to work. The focus is on not spending money.
    • Where possible, consider using holiday days, personal leave, or sick days to reduce production on Thursdays.
    • Even if you cannot stay home, your participation in the spending strike alone is a massive.
Your Money Matters!

In Canada household consumption (on an average) makes up for 56 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). GDP is a way to measure the size of the economy/economic activity of a country or region. The major components of GDP is consumption, government spending, net exports (exports minus imports) and investment.

This means that where and when people spend money directly shape the strength of the economy. By withdrawing our spending TOGETHER, even for a single day, we create a disruption that is both visible and measurable.

For example the daily consumer spending in the US averages $45-50 billion.

  • If 5 percent of Americans withheld their spending for one single day that would translate into a $2-2.5 billion.
  • Economist would notice, and if the action is repeated consistently the impact increases – politicians will notice!
Impact
  • Retail & Transactions
    • A one day coordinated pause in purchase, if millions take part across the globe – will immediately show up in retail data, transactions , and electronic payment activity.
  • Fuel and Transport
    • A noticeable dip in gas sales, charging Zero Emissions Vehicles (electric cars etc), especially if it happens on the same day each week, will be reflected in economic reports and transportation authority revenue.
  • Financial flows:
    • Mass delays in withdrawals, payments, or transactions can affect short-term liquidity, which analyst tracks closely. Liquidity is a company’s ability to convert assets to cash or to get cash.
  • Market: A single day alone will not destabilize markets – but the sharp up and down in transactions are highly visible. They send a clear message, and the tactic can be escalated to two or three days a week if needed.

Individuals actions matters when we do them together!
